Extremely compact, the Golden Age Audio COMP-3A JR opto-style compressor can do a lot with just two control pots and a few switches. Twist the Gain Reduction pot to the right until you hit a healthy level of gain reduction before tweaking the Gain Makeup pot to compensate for any volume loss. The compression response and mode is easily set via the mini-switches, so if you're treating the drums, then the on-board side-chain filter can be activated to de-intensify the low-end response, keeping the kick sound full and round. You also get the pick of three timing settings, where the fastest setting pushes all of the details right to the front and the slowest setting retains articulate punch and a consistent level.
